Podcast: America's aging crisis
I talk to an old friend from Madison about America's neglect of the old.
This week I talked to an old friend from my days as a student blogger and newspaper reporter in Madison, Wis.
Judy Karofsky was my septuagenarian neighbor in an area of Madison almost entirely inhabited by young people. Now, in her 80's, she's written a book, Diselderly Conduct: The Flawed Business of Assisted Living & Hospice, inspired by her own frustrating — at times harrowing — experience caring for her late mother.
We talk about a range of things: America's overwhelmed eldercare system, building communities that are friendlier to older people and the benefits of generational diversity in neighborhoods. She also has some interesting stories from her time as mayor of Middleton, Wis. in the 1970's, when she was the only woman mayor in the state of Wisconsin.
Judy joined me for a conversation from her Madison condo, her dog Brie at her side. You can watch below on YouTube or listen on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
