Public transit enters the 2010's
Tap to pay is finally here!
It's nice to report some good news about public transit in Austin for a change. CapMetro has finally implemented tap to pay, meaning you can now pay for the bus the way you probably already pay for everything else: with a credit card or mobile wallet.

In recent years CapMetro has accepted payment via cash, transit cards or various infuriating apps. At one point in 2024 the fare payment system was down for an entire month, likely costing the agency millions in lost fares. I'm sure the accidental free rides were a welcome treat to many of its low-income riders, but I also know that the challenge of figuring out how to pay CapMetro has turned off potential customers.
