The tax rate election veto

Some Council members feel left out.

Some City Council members are worried that a proposed policy for tax rate elections would leave them out of the process.

The proposed "decision tree" drawn up by Mayor Kirk Watson requires that a TRE first be "certified" by the Audit & Finance Committee, a five-member body of which he is the chair.

City Council committees do not traditionally hold that kind of power in Austin. They are meant to inform the work of Council but do not typically have any formal power to dictate what goes on the Council agenda.
