The zoning battle again
An old three-unit building on S. 5th St.

The urbanists may have been asleep at the wheel recently but they were out in force today at City Hall in support of a series of items they hope will lead to less parking, more "missing middle" housing and more small businesses in residential areas. In sharp contrast to past years, very few reform opponents showed up.

All of the items were approved on the consent agenda with little discussion. Let's take a look at the details.

Missing middle & mixed use overlay

The resolution, approved 10-1 with only Marc Duchen against, asks city staff to craft up new zoning districts that allow "missing middle" housing types like rowhomes, cottage courts and small apartment developments. It separately asks staff to consider zoning districts to allow more mixed-use development, including "live-work" units and multifamily with ground-floor retail.
