Last week Lt. William White, who leads APD's highway enforcement division, was one of a number of witnesses at the Capitol to speak before the Senate Committee on Transportation on the matter of autonomous vehicles.

White said that APD was dealing with both "minor" and serious issues involving AVs. The most notable serious incident was a Waymo briefly blocking emergency vehicles responding to the deadly mass shooting on W. 6th St in March.

White didn't suggest that AVs were committing violations more frequently than human drivers, but that the department was frustrated by its inability to hold the offending companies accountable.

"We still have issues and more than that, the same issues seem to occur repeatedly, which is both frustrating and dispiriting for our first responders," he said.
