Austin wants more involuntary commitment

Could the state help?

A common misconception about homelessness in America is that those suffering from severe mental illness on the street are only there because local progressive leaders aren't willing to involuntarily commit them for mental health and/or addiction treatment.

In my experience, nothing could be further from the truth. Everybody with any meaningful influence in homelessness policy in Austin would like to see far more involuntary commitment.

There just isn't any treatment capacity. There aren't enough beds to accommodate even a fraction of those of those who are clearly incapable of caring for themselves.
