An inconvenient truth about the I-35 expansion
In criticizing the I-35 expansion, I have typically focused on why the project is monumentally stupid even if you don't give a shit about the environment. Notably, it won't reduce congestion and it reduces the economic potential of Austin's central business district in favor of fiscally unsustainable sprawl development.
I've largely neglected the environmental argument because it just seemed too obvious. But perhaps that was a mistake, considering that many of the proponents of the project claim to care deeply about the environment and indeed have even argued that this massive highway expansion is being done out of love for Mother Nature.
