The saga of Sunrise

South Austin celebrates the impending departure of a homeless service center.

The saga of Sunrise
The Sunrise Church Navigation Center on Menchaca Rd.

Big news for my old neighborhood in South Austin. KXAN's Grace Reader reports:

A controversial homeless resource hub in south Austin — the Sunrise Homeless Navigation Center — will be relocating, according to Austin City Council Member Ryan Alter.
Alter, who’s district encompasses the navigation center, says the city is “acquiring a property which will serve as a new navigation center in a more appropriate location.”

This is a big W for Alter.

Just over a year ago I attended a neighborhood meeting at the Woodlawn Baptist Church on Menchaca Rd. At least 200 people showed up in the middle of a weekday to listen to city officials talk about what they were doing to reduce homelessness and preserve public order in the neighborhood.

Well, some of them were there to listen. Many were just there to berate the assortment of community leaders, accusing them of allowing a formerly sleepy, serene neighborhood to descend into lawlessness.
