Who doesn't want to call 911
How can the city make people feel safe?
There are many reasons why someone in danger won't call 911. They may have a warrant for their own arrest. They may be an undocumented immigrant or they may be a legal immigrant who has seen how even those with legal status are at risk under the current regime.
Today City Council unanimously approved a resolution aimed at making it easier for people to call the cops without the fear that it will lead to their own arrest or deportation.
It's hard to know what exactly will come out of the resolution and whether it will have a meaningful effect on APD practices. It directs the city manager to convene a series of meetings with a "Safe to Call" working group to explore policies, strategies and practices to "assure vulnerable populations that they will be safe when they call the city for emergency services."
